Sag Harbor Modern

RRL Architecture and Design was commissioned to design a 5,000 Sq.Ft. home for a 1-acre lot in close proximity to Sag Harbor Cove. The site is within the FEMA flood zones which means the new home needed to be elevated 6 six feet above ground level. The new landscape was designed to hide the fact that the house is elevated and incorporates the use of cascading planting terraces and gradual steps. The new home appears to sit in the middle of a prairie surrounded by tall grasses and wild bushes typical of the surrounding waterfront areas. The L-shaped home is composed of intersecting flat-roof and gable-roof volumes on either side which results in a hybrid of a modern barn. One enters the house through a transparent foyer that brings the entry experience towards a courtyard located at the intersection of the volumes. The courtyard is central to the experience of the house by opening up views and bringing in light in every direction. A long and wide central spine connects all the common spaces of the house on the ground level while double height spaces connect them to the private quarters on the upper level. The design intent was to create a house that felt connected to the exterior landscape as well as to its spaces within.
